de43 asked: So, we have a female ferret as a pet and it’s 6 months old already or so.
My mom checked some breeders forums and they said that one must neuter (i.e. castrate) the ferret because if it has offsprings, it will shorten its life dramatically.
Is this true? Or was this just a lie spread from ferret-breeders in order to avoid competition?
Thanks.
We got the ferret from a woman we found on a newspaper ad who somehow got an unaltered-one and did breed it. It’s been 3-4 months since then and the ferret’s been very healthy so I don’t think there are any problems with that.
And it is legal to keep un-altered ferrets here, by the way.
Uhm… about the health problems. Not any cats or dogs or whatever seem to have any more health problems if they stay unaltered and have offsprings so I just can’t see how ferrets would be different.
I have noticed quite a few male ferret owners advertising, and heard the altering operation affects the ferret’s life a lot (it’s probably quite painful and not having offsprings is kinda against the animal nature), and furthermore it means a financial loss.
So I just wanna make sure we’re not doing something amiss just because it’s not of the best interest of some ferret-breeders anyway.
Some of you got me wrong - sure, we would be going to bread it. There is no question about that.
And that is what my original question was.
Look, this is the last time I’m adding details to this. I don’t want to initially offend anybody but people are not getting what I am saying or I am not getting it myself (which is unlikely).
Say, a women. Does she live any shorter if she has children? Is there a correlation with life-expectancy and parenting? No? Alrighjt.
Now, a female ferret. Does she live any shorter? She does? Why?
If there is a biological reason for that, I would like to hear that.
No, people brainwashed into thinking ferrets are likely to get cancer, pneumonia, alsheimers whatever just because they have children dont’ go. I need something based on sctientific proof than of ferret-breeders opinion.
That’s quite a simple question, I think.
No, I don’t yet need to know about breeding ferrets. I’m asking about altering them or not as I can’t see why that is needed.
Also, don’t tell me to go to the fucking veterinarian because they know ****. Well, the ones I have been to, do.
