We live in the country and for some reason people seem to think that we are the local dumping ground for unwanted pets. I have found homes for as many of them as I can, but this last kitten is just too adorable and I can’t give him up. The problem is, with so many cats being dropped off out here, many of them have become feral and my two adult cats have had many a run in and have spent many painful trips to the vet as a result. They are so freaked out by any other cat whatsoever, that just the smell of one on my hands makes them crazy. They even hiss at me and try to bite.

I have to find a way to get them to accept this poor little lost kitten. I don’t want to put them through mental trauma or anything, but I also don’t want to make a mistake and have them rip this adorable baby apart either.

Any suggestions?

Several years ago I had a cat with kidney disease and gave her prescription food (among other things.) However, my new cat was constipated and we went in for treatment and prescription food was pushed on me again. Then, at her regular check-up I was told that her weight was fantastic, all of her tests indicate that she’s a healthy 5 yr old cat, and then the vet went down this road: “oh, she has a little tarter on her teeth; you might want to try Hills Prescription diet. Oh, and by the way, any problems with the litter box? No? Well, what sort of litter do you use? Well, I recommend brand X, which we happen to have over here…” Very profit-motivated. Personally I think that prescription pet food can be very important for certain conditions, but that some vets recommend it way too often in order to make a profit. I have since switched vets, so no need to recommend that. Just wondering about other experiences with prescription food.
Just as a reminder, I’m not asking for any pet advice. I go to my vet for that. tmrvt please read the questions before answering. I’m simply asking about people’s experiences with vets recommending prescription food. Thanks.
